My Journey to Being a Therapist |
From a young age I have been interested in this experience of being human. This curiosity has been at times defined by fear, anxiety, and depression as well as by joy, insight, discovery, and “a-ha” moments. I have discovered that little stays fixed in life, that my perceptions are often but not always reliable, that there are many levels to experience, and that there are some useful guide posts along the way.
After high school I worked a wide range of different jobs; for many of them I was self-employed. Sometimes my work was inspiring and engaged me in some way and sometimes my jobs were menial but they allowed me to do something else that was creative or that I was passionate about. I didn’t have any inclination toward a career. As I approached middle age I felt the desire to settle into something for the long term. I enrolled in community college thinking that it was a good next step but without knowing what I was going to end up doing. During this period, I did some personal growth workshops and started working on my own issues with a counselor. One day I was leaving my therapist’s office and was waiting at the elevator. As the elevator doors opened I had a clear and sudden insight, "That's what I want to do!" I shifted my focus at school toward psychology and, several years later, became a therapist. |
